Every two years, the Manuel de Solà-Morales European Prize will recognize the best university research in the field of urbanism carried out by a student granted a PhD. Candidates can be anyone studying at a European University whose research for their doctoral thesis is grounded in urbanism, according to the application procedure on lub.upc.edu/msmprize.The award honours the memory of Professor of Urbanism, and architect, Manuel de Solà-Morales Rubio (1939-2012) who understood his subject as a creative and intellectual activity, committed to improving cities through what he called "persistent research"


Candidates can present any PhD thesis that has urbanism as the object of the candidate's research. The thesis must have been written in a European language and must have been presented and qualified in a European university between 1st January 2018 and 15th April 2022. It should also have obtained the maximum mark (cum laude or equivalent). The completed thesis should not have been fully published yet. Scientific and academic papers in indexed journals are excluded.


15th April to 30th September, 2022- Acceptance of Nominations

Mid-December, 2022 - Preliminary selection of finalists. Only selected candidates will be informed.

Mid-March, 2023 - Ceremony - Publication of the jury's verdict


The best PhD will receive a prize of €7,000. Depending on the quality of the work submitted, the first prize may be shared ex aequo or might even be declared void. Additionally, the jury may consider issuing a number of runners-up. The Prize winner and finalists will receive a diploma.
